Design Mechanics Presentation

Dave Pannell sees the Design Mechanics as a finishing school. Employees have opportunity to gain experience in industry staying for around 12 months before moving on to larger companies.

Research should be undertaken and CV’s chased underlining commitment, if not chased applicants won’t be contacted. Portfolio must look professional showing skills in web and print design, emphasis on commercial standard work. Impressive portfolios precede qualifications. Interviews focus on personality and ability to integrate. Need to detach from work and design for client not yourself. Employees should not think they know everything. They must have willingness to learn.

I think you've made a good point there with the 'willingness' to learn. I think this is a common thought, as I want to learn things that perhaps won't be taught on this course. I think that looks good to an employer too as you've actually undertaken learning in your own time.

Good blog entry, id actualy recommend students that could not make it to the 'Design mechanics' presentation to take a few minutes of their time and read your entry....

The hardest part I feel may be detaching yourself from the work you produce. I can look through my own work and I know which my best is, but the client may disagree totally.

The methods Dave uses for applicants was very inspiring. I learned that chasing up your CV will make you appeal more.

A very difficult task to fit so many points into so little words but you've done extremely well to.

It was intersting to hear Dave believes he doesn't expect employees to stay longer with his goal of 'national web design domination'
